SwarmSpan vs. Universal Clipboard

Universal Clipboard, but for your Mac and your PC.

Apple's Universal Clipboard is great — until one of your machines runs Windows. Then the copy stops at the OS line and you're back to emailing yourself a link. SwarmSpan is a free, tray-only app for both platforms that gives you one shared clipboard and direct file handoff between your Mac and your PC. Local-only, no account, no cloud in the middle.

SwarmSpan

One clipboard across a Mac and a Windows PC

Copy a path, a stack trace, or a screenshot on either machine and paste it on the other with one hotkey. Plus direct, resumable file transfer at any size — all over your own network, with nothing uploaded to anyone.

Mac + Windows Searchable history Direct file handoff Local-only · no account Free
Apple Universal Clipboard

Effortless — inside the Apple ecosystem

Seamless copy-and-paste between a Mac, iPhone, and iPad signed into the same iCloud account. Wonderful when every device is Apple — but it has no concept of a Windows PC, and it keeps only the most recent copy.

Zero setup Apple devices only Last copy only No Windows
Credit where it's due

What Universal Clipboard gets right.

If all your devices are Apple, Universal Clipboard is hard to beat and SwarmSpan isn't trying to replace it. It's worth being honest about what it does well.

Copy on iPhone, paste on Mac with zero setup

Built into macOS and iOS — nothing to install

Handoff, AirDrop, and Sidecar in the same family

Where it stops

…and where the Apple-only design leaves you stuck.

The moment a Windows machine enters your workflow — a work PC, a gaming rig, a build box — Universal Clipboard simply doesn't apply. This is the exact gap SwarmSpan was built to close.

Nothing crosses to a Windows PC — ever

Requires the same iCloud account, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi on

No history — it's the last copy only, gone once you copy again

No real file handoff between Mac and PC

SwarmSpan complements Universal Clipboard — keep using Apple's for your iPhone and iPad, and let SwarmSpan carry the clipboard the one place Apple won't: across to your PC.

How the bridge works

Pair once, then it just works on the LAN.

  1. Install the tray app on both machines Native menu-bar app on macOS, native tray app on Windows. No browser tab, no background service to babysit.
  2. Pair with a six-digit code Shown on one device, typed on the other. After that they auto-discover each other on your network — no accounts, no re-pairing each session.
  3. Copy here, paste there Press Ctrl+Alt+V on Windows or Control+Option+V on macOS to open a shared, searchable history and paste any recent item into the app in front of you.
